Daniel E. Momberger, the beloved son of Geraldine “Gerri” and the late John E. “Jack” Momberger of Rural Ridge, PA, died on February 26, 2026, in Allegheny General Hospital. Born on July 5, 1973, with Spina Bifida, Dan finally lost his courageous battle with complications from his condition. In addition to his mother, Dan is survived by a brother, Bradley Momberger of Worcester, MA; his close companion Lisa Miller; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Dan was predeceased by his wife Buffy (Bailey) Momberger, with whom he was married for 22 years after meeting her at a summer Spina Bifida camp, his father John Momberger, his sister Kelly Momberger, and his grandparents, Lawrence and Madeline (Thimons) Yeasted, and J. Edward and Emelia (Basnak) Momberger.
A 1991 graduate of Fox Chapel High School, Dan was able to attend public schools but also spent considerable time at the Children’s Institute (formerly known as the Home for Crippled Children) in Squirrel Hill. He spent many of his early summers at the Spina Bifida Camp run by the Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania and was a member of the first graduating class of Gatehouse, a program set up to help young adults with Spina Bifida live an independent life. Dan loved playing cards, challenging himself with word games and puzzles, and listening to music. An avid fan of the Steelers, he watched games of no other team on television.
The family is grateful for the wonderful care Dan received over the years at both Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital and Allegheny General Hospital. A special thanks is offered to Sr. Rita Yeasted, Dan’s aunt, who provided spiritual support to Dan and initiated a prayer chain that extended around the world. Dan was an inspiration to all who knew him, especially his family. He will be sorely missed.
