It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Douglas R. Shirey. Douglas died unexpectedly on August 26, 2018 in Lower Burrell at the age of 41. He was born October 12, 1976 in Huntingdon, PA. Douglas grew up in Clarion Co., PA, graduating from Clarion Area High School where he was actively involved in wrestling, cross country and track. After high school Doug moved on to graduate from the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute with a degree in Culinary Arts. Doug most recently worked as a chef at the Blue North Restaurant in the North Hills of Pgh., PA and prior to that the Mighty Oak Barrel, Oakmont. He was a veteran of the US Navy. Doug loved science and nature. He was accomplished in culinary arts and had a passion for drawing and painting. Doug could be found in his free time hiking, biking and working in his garden.
Doug is survived by his parents, Thomas and Cynthia (Schenck) Shirey of Freeport, PA and twin brother Stephen Shirey of Cranberry Township, PA. Along with his mother, father and brother, Doug will be lovingly remembered by many: Grandmother Edith Shirey, sister-in-law Amy Shirey, niece Ava Elizabeth Shirey, nephew Aiden Thomas Shirey, aunts and uncles: Patricia and Robert Storch, Susanne and Richard Hart, Barbara and Steven Thompson, Tami Jo Shirey-Turchich,Susan Shirey, Michael and Jill Shirey, Herbert and Jean Shirey, cousins and families of: Jonathan(Jennifer) Hart, Allison Hart (Jackie Turner), Erica Thompson, Steven (Carrie)Thompson, Nick (Emma) Storch, Alexandra (Chad) Stem, Tracy (Andrew) Brooks, Lindsey Shirey, Jay (Kim) Shirey, Nic (Angie) Shirey, Lauren Shirey, Leigh Anne Shirey, Sean Patton, Ryan Patton, Alex Turchich, and Rachel (AJ) Spittel, and a special friend Christina Supo. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Henry and Ruth Schenck and paternal grandfather Burton Shirey.
At the request of the family, a private service will be held in Doug’s honor. Arrangements by Duster Funeral Home, Inc. 347 E 10th Ave, Tarentum, 724-224-1526. Burial will be private in Schenck’s Cemetery, Centre County. VISIT: dusterfh.com
