Joann Margery Hanlon passed away on November 22, 2024 in Dover, OH. Born in Tarentum, PA on the 24th of September, 1934 she was the fourth of six children of Anna (Capellman) and John Strobel. In spite of hardships Joann had a bubbly personality and her nickname at Harbrack High School in Brackenridge, PA was “chatterbox.”
She married William Hanlon and they had six children, settling down in Euclid, OH. Feeding and dressing this gang was not always easy. Joann would stay up late into the nights to sew and mend many of their clothes. She was a devoted and loving mother who always had a smile on her face and a song on her lips.
Joann was a bundle of energy and loved her work and friends at Sawyer Research in Willoughby, OH. She volunteered at the Henn Mansion in Euclid, OH until she was 80.
Joann was curious! Her kids called her Curious George. She was always pulling out dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps and the atlas. She’d walk her family to the bookmobile. Thus, she raised six very curious children.
Perhaps most importantly Joann had a great big heart. She was kind to people that others treated as invisible. When in the hospital she gave her gift boxes of chocolates to the cleaning staff. She treated everyone she met with grace and kindness. She also taught her kids at an early age to be kind to classmates who had a hard time fitting in.
Joann combined her love of family and love of baking by making each child and grandchild elaborate cakes on their birthday. There were castle cakes, Winnie the Pooh cakes, a Raggedy Ann cake, doll cakes, Snoopy cakes, and a seven layer cake for a granddaughter turning seven, to name a few. In her recipe notebook she had a list of each grandchild’s favorite cookie.
Halloween was Joann’s favorite holiday and the costumes of her children were always handmade. They won prizes in every parade they entered. She even sewed a bumble bee costume for her two year old great granddaughter at age 85! Once her kids were grown Joann’s adventurous nature was able to flourish, she visited the ruins of Pompeii, and dipped her toe in the Dead Sea in Israel.
Joann is survived by her children and their spouses, Kathleen (Bob Barstead) Hanlon, Maureen (Scot) Hammond, Mary Jo (Jeff Hess) Hanlon, Bill (Renee) Hanlon,Tom (Carol) Hanlon and Laurie (Bob) Freeman. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Megan Barstead, Maura Barstead, Cara Hammond, Callie Audet, Jenna Pagel, Tessa Hammond, Molly Hanlon, Nathan Freeman, Ellie Maley, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings Jack Strobel, Shirley Smith, Rose Benvenuti, Jim Strobel and Paul Strobel.
See you later, Alligator!
