Michael J. “Salt” Wos, 97, Brackenridge and formerly of Creighton, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Southwestern Veterans Center, Pittsburgh. He was born May 18, 1921, in Creighton to the late Michael and Nellie (Walkowicz) Wos. Michael resided in Brackenridge since 1968 and prior to that lived in Creighton. He worked as a shipper for ALCOA in New Kensington, and also in the traffic control division for Allegheny County. Michael graduated from East Deer Frazer High School in 1941 and attended the New Kensington Commercial School. Michael was a gifted “story teller” who was very proud of his Polish heritage. He was active in local and Allegheny county Democratic committees. He played semi professional football for the Creighton Tigers, and was a lifelong Steeler season ticket holder. Michael enjoyed live theater, taking trips and watching horse racing with granddaughter Lisa. Michael was a veteran of the US Coast Guard during WWII serving aboard the U.S.S. Burlington.
Survivors include his daughter Lorraine (Wos) DiMeno, Lower Burrell; grandchildren Lisa D. (Kurt) Lorence, Indiana Twp., Zachary M. (Dana, girlfriend) Masi, Pgh., Nicholas J. (Nadya, girlfriend) Masi, Pgh. and Shane Beckett, Fawn Twp.; 2 great grandchildren Sadie and Jack Lorence. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Palka) Wos in 1993; son Michael D. (Christi) Wos and a daughter Donna Jean Masi who passed away 2 weeks ago on January 15, 2019.
Visitation 5-8 PM Friday in the Duster Funeral Home, Inc. 347 E 10th Ave, Tarentum, 724-224-1526. Christian funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 12:30 PM in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Natrona Heights with Rev. Aaron J. Kriss, officiating. Burial in Union Cemetery, Arnold.
