January 23, 1937 — January 7, 2024

Brackenridge

Rev. Edward Carter, Jr., 86, of Brackenridge, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 7, 2024. He was born January 23, 1937 and was the eighth of 15 children born to the late Edward and Lillian (Smith) Carter, Sr. Rev. Carter was born in West Leechburg and was a proud Leechburg Blue Devil. Throughout high school, he participated as the only black student in the marching band. Upon graduation, he became one of the “few good men” of the United States Marine Corp. After retiring from the Corp, Pastor Carter’s faith in God grew and he decided to follow his calling. He attended the Transylvania Bible School (now known as Biblical Life Institute) and received a bachelor’s degree in theology. In 1967, he met the love of his life, Charlotte Collier. They met, courted and married within 30 days and would have celebrated 57 years of marriage in March. Rev. Carter has lived in Brackenridge since 1968. He served as pastor of his beloved Shiloh Baptist Church, Brackenridge for 43 years and previously pastored at the Morning Star Baptist Church, Kiskimere for 13 years. Rev. Carter was also a Welder & Material handler at Westinghouse Electric in Cheswick for 35 years, retiring in 1998. As a younger man, he was a very active member of the Allegheny Union Baptist Association, Allegheny Valley Association of Churches and a member of the Brackenridge American Legion, VFW (National Organization), 32nd Degree Mason, Kiski Valley 101, Consistory of Pittsburgh #4 and Holy Royal Arch, New Kensington. He was a 1956 graduate of Leechburg High School. Rev. Carter enjoyed woodworking, gardening and especially cherished his family.

Pastor Carter leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 57 years Charlotte (Collier) Carter; his son Dwayne E. Collier, at home, daughter Mary Jo Carter, of Tarentum, grandson Joel E. Carter, of New Kensington and great grandson Leon E. Carter, of Apollo. Also surviving is his niece Linda, of Brackenridge, siblings Ted Carter, of New Kensington, Ethel Hayden, of Tarentum, Rev.
