Robert Eugene Artkowsky, 95, of Lower Burrell, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 while residing at Concordia of Cabot, PA with his wife at his side.
Bob married widow Evelyn Sobotka (Capoccioni) on June 20, 1959 and adopted her two children, Walter Sobotka Artkowsky and Marlene Sobotka Artkowsky. Bob and Evelyn had one daughter together, Robin Ann Artkowsky.
He was a 1946 graduate of Tarentum High Schol where he played football for the Redcats. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army and spent a year in Japan at the end of WWII in the occupational force, for which he received a medal.
After the military, he attended 4 years of college at West Liberty University and graduated with a BA in teaching. While in college he played football for 4 years and was proud to be on undefeated teams that played in the Smokey Mt. Bowl game. He also began playing golf while in college and was on the University golf team.
He graduated from West Liberty University in 1953 and began his teaching career in 1954 for Lower Burrell School District. He also went on to receive his Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He retired from teaching in 1988.
While teaching school, he also coached Burrel High School Golf team from 1970 to 1979 and also taught golf for the school district’s summer program. He was a principal at Braeburn and Bon Air schools for about 10 years. He also worked for the Valley News Dispatch as a circulation manager from 1979 thru 1988.
Bob was an avid golfer his whole life. He had three holes in one and numerous rounds in the 60’s. As a senior, he was the first flight Champion at River Forest Country Club. He loved reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing chess and took up playing the keyboard in his old age. While a member, he also worked part-time at River Forest Country Club and also was a member at the Vandergrift Golf Club.
Surviving Bob are his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Artkowsky of Concordia in Cabot, PA, son Dr. Walter (Leslie) Artkowsky of Waynesburg, PA and daughters Marlene (Vijay) Dhar of West Palm Beach, Florida and Robin Ann (Dr. Greg) Zawrotny of Indiana, PA; two grandchildren Emily (Joshua) Strohm of Downingtown, PA and Anna Artkowsky of Charlotte, NC and great grandchild Madelyn Jane Strohm of Downingtown, PA. Also surviving is Bob’s brother, Donald (Betty) Artkowsky of Georgia. Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Josecki Artkowsky and father, Joseph Artkowsky, as well as his siblings Ida Snyder (John), Olga Pometo (Andy), Sophia McNally (Patrick), Joe Artkowsky (Vincie), Ted Artkowsky (Sue), Ginger Litz (Chuck), Violet Cole (Larry), Loretta Hammersly Bachman (Red), Irene Kafoury (Fred) and Henry Artkowsky.
Visitation 3-7 PM Friday and Saturday from 10 AM until the time of service at 11 AM in Duster Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. 347 E 10th Ave, Tarentum, 724-224-1526 with Rev.
